Doubt – Its a good thing (& the Anti-aging contradiction)

If there has been a time when you feel in limbo; questioning and experiencing a deep felt un-sureness or anxiety about an area in your life; relationships, career, moving, staying, and so on… then learn one thing today… You Are On The ‘Right’ Track. This article is to help turn feelings of helplessness into empowerment and understand that real change happens when we challenge our doubts.

Un-sureness comes from questioning and when we question we acknowledge that we are human beings with a FREE WILL. If we don’t question and don’t use our free will…then we become primal beings; just following our impulses. In Vedanta, a spiritual Guru Swami Parthasarathy refers to going-with-the-flow without questioning as THE HERD INSTINCT = doing something because everyone else is doing it. We are feeling-thinking-doing beings and when faced with a decision it would benefit us to pause and consider the decision ahead…pros and cons for example.  It’s not possible ALL the time at first. Be kind to yourself…there are years and years of  conditionings and habitual reactions within us but over time we CAN master PAUSING.

Quick recap

  1. Un-sureness is a natural part of life, it reminds us to make use of our free will and help us make as much of a ‘good’ a decision as we can (for ourselves and those around us. No need to feel guilty or overwhelmed )
  2. Learning to PAUSE mentally is a start at giving ourselves time and space to consider the doubt and decision at hand. Once you pinpoint the trigger of anxiety or doubt  try this : Sit by yourself and get out a pen and paper. Jot down pros and cons and other important factors regarding the decision.

Life is change…a series of transitions.  If there is one thing in life that is clear, it would be that statement…yet we entertain the idea of ANTI-aging .  Why? Aging represents change. It is an eventuality…why does it bother or instill a feeling of fear or discomfort in some of us? The proof of this discomfort or fear is the fact that the anti-aging market will rack up a worth of about $295 billion by 2015…yup, playing on the insecurity of the most natural process of life is worth big bucks. Competitors in the market will keep playing on this insecurity as long as we have that very insecurity. Don’t take this wrongly, take care of your hair skin and health but there’s no need to fuel a market based on pricking and prodding at a  vulnerability. We give them that power though…

So, back to transition; it’s such an inviting word but in truth change is not always easy and it would be worthwhile to find out why and how to accept change/transition gracefully. The operative word being trying and even if it takes a lifetime…it’s a fulfilling way to spend time because…another pair of designer shoes, another zero at the end of a bank balance etc etc won’t truly give us what we are looking for LONG-TERM. Instant-pleasure are just that; instant and then what?

Anywhoo,

Un-sureness CAN be transformed into something positive and to help do this we need to have a starting point (and cheers to making use of FREE WILL!)

From her website:

Are you suffering from anxiety, depression, self-doubt, difficulty making decisions, or relationship challenges?

Are you looking for more joy and fulfillment in your life?

Welcome, and I’m so glad you found your way here. It is my passion to help people break free from anxiety and limiting beliefs so that they can live a life of joy and fulfillment. Anxiety can show up in a variety of ways, and if any of these describe your experience, I’m here to help you.

You’re bolting awake in the middle of the night with your heart pounding or walking around with a pit in your stomach or battling with obsessive or intrusive thoughts like:

  • “What if I have a terminal illness?”
  • “Do I love my partner enough?”
  • “What if I hurt my baby?”
  • Or you’re living with a running commentary that says:
  • “It’s not safe”
  • “I’m not good enough”
  • “In order to be loved I have to be perfect”
  • Did you know that – with the right tools, support, and commitment – anxiety is a doorway into wholeness?

Also a great starting point is this awesome quiz found on Oprah’s website

Forget your career. Forget your role as a mother or a wife. Forget how much money you make or how successful you are. If you’re struggling with the question “Who am I meant to be?”, this quiz can help you figure out what really defines you. Based on personality science, I have identified seven “striving styles,” modes of thought and behavior that direct us to seek satisfaction in different ways. Although everybody is wired with all seven styles, most people have one that dominates. When you engage this innate style, you’ve got the best shot at fulfilling your potential; when you don’t, you can feel stuck.

After responding to the statements below, you will discover your striving style, learn what to do if it’s backfiring from neglect, and find ideas to guide your life in the direction that it was meant to go.

About MsUtopia

u•to•pi•a A theoretical "perfect" realm, in which everyone is content, where things get done well by people who are happy to do them, and where all the problems which have plagued our world for millennia no longer apply. Whoever came up with the idea was drunk, stoned, tripping or insane. Maybe all four. When in doubt, forget what Sir Thomas More said and go straight to Urban Dictionary hey? Just to clear up the conceptual mist…I am not a Utopian Socialist, or Miss Perfect or on acid. I do however appreciate the idea of a Utopia; in that all the parts that make up the whole (as a typical anthropologist would attempt see) function harmoniously, ‘perfectly.’ It is an ideal, but who said an ideal is impossible? It just requires effort in the right direction, consistently. Utopia is spoken of as an imagined place, a Never Never Land…instead it’s about the undiscovered Utopia of my mind, of your mind, and it’s all about starting at the individual level. Utopia is described as a perfect place; instead what is introduced is the idea of individual relative perfection. Anyway, I’m not a rainbows & unicorns kinda person, the truth is we have qualities which are ‘good’ and some that are ‘bad’ so the point is to positively develop oneself through practical methods. That’s pretty much what I’m about, yes there will be mistakes, impulses, stumbles falls…but that’s the process and it’s helpful to make peace with that. Even if it takes a lifetime. It’s time best spent. There was for as long as I can remember an interest in human beings more specifically the heart, the head and how they work…how we express ourselves at different levels; at home, work, in relationships, in our community and so on. I find myself a social anthropologist today because of that interest I guess. I met a philosopher along the way. He has understood a philosophy that is universal, about 10 000 years old and timeless. I heard him speak once, and he made sense so I went to India to live at the Vedanta Academy for almost 2 years. While in India I started taking Yoga more seriously and that owes to me becoming a yoga teacher. I also tutor anthropology and the dissemination of knowledge seems to bring with it an education in itself. I have the interest of fitness, nutrition and beauty but more the ‘natural methods.’ There’s no gender-bias so dudes, you can give things a try as well. Well, that’s me in a few paragraphs. A liberating feeling in that the little self is a page long. I genuinely hope you find this blog useful, and feel free to question, give feedback and share. ..
